This Wednesday (March 12, 1-2pm EDT), I'm hosting a discussion on a book that remains at the top of my "must read" list for community builders.
Will Guidara's "Unreasonable Hospitality" tells story after story of how he took his restaurant from struggling to #1 in the world—not through massive budgets, but through thoughtfulness. Small moments of connection that cost almost nothing.
Here’s one story to give you a feel: Tourists at Eleven Madison Park (a very, very fancy restaurant) were enjoying their final meal in NYC. As staff served course after mind-blowing course, they overheard the guests lamenting that despite trying everything they wanted in New York, they'd missed out on one iconic experience—a classic street vendor hot dog. ðŸŒ
Guidara quietly slipped out, bought a two-dollar hot dog, had his chef elegantly plate it, and personally delivered it to their table.
Total cost: $2
Time invested: 10 minutes
Customer joy (and loyalty): Priceless
That's community building at its finest—noticing what people are saying, what they’re missing, and what they truly value. Then, stepping in to make them feel seen and appreciated through thoughtful gestures.
In the spirit of unreasonable hospitality, we're opening our Hive doors for this special event.
Join us Wednesday (March 12, 1-2pm EDT) to discuss how to apply these hospitality principles in our communities - especially when we're working with limited time and resources!
No need to have read the book, but if you have a few moments to spare between now and Wednesday, his TED Talk is just 15 minutes.
I've heard of this book a few times, from a few different directions. May buy this 'as a gift for my wife', who owns a guesthouse. By chance, that will then mean the book is also available for me to read 😇
Oh I'm here for this levelling up of community hosting 🫡
