People may join your community with a goal. They want to learn something and they’re convinced you can teach them.
You have the knowledge. You can help them crack the code to meet their goals.
That is the member journey, and it’s vitally important. That’s why people pay to come into your community. But, it’s not enough.
Because the thing that made them join won’t make them stay.
Communities are a hot trend right now. It seems like everyone and their barista is starting a community – but most of them won’t last.
That’s because what makes your members stick around is much more human, much “squishier” than picking up knowledge.
It’s feeling seen, heard, and understood. It’s having a place to belong.
Admittedly, that’s a little bit harder to build, and certainly harder to scale. Luckily, one of America’s leading writers recently wrote a book called How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen.
Author David Brooks has spent the past four years learning how to understand people and make them feel respected, valued, and safe.
Don’t worry if you don’t have time to read it. We’ve got you covered! Just take a listen to this podcast episode, and you'll be set!
I am so excited to sit down with the brilliant minds from The Next Big Idea Club to talk about the big ideas in this book and how we can translate them into strategies to better know and support our members.
We’ll talk about topics like:
Starting and guiding meaningful conversations
Rethinking community design for deeper connections
Practical tips include finding a "gem statement," avoiding topping stories, and "looping"
It’s an exclusive event – and as a valued member of my growing Substack community (thank you!) YOU’RE invited.
Join me for this free, live event Tuesday, March 12, at 1pm EST. Can’t wait to see you there!
I believe in you and your big ideas,
PS. Have you been waiting for the doors to 🐝The Hive, our community-builders’ community, to reopen? It won’t be long now – your next chance to join is coming in March. Get on the waitlist to be one of the first to know when the doors open (and maybe even get a little bonus!).
